Research Directions

  • The foci of research in my laboratory are biodiversity, composition, dynamics and functions of the aquatic bacterial communities in two aquatic ecosystems coral reef and lake ecosystems. In the coral reef ecosystem, bacteria are potentially related to health, disease and nutrient supply in coral holobionts. Long term surveys found coral-associated bacteria community has high diversity and rapid changes in its composition. However, it still lacks direct evidence of the interaction between bacterial associates and their coral hosts. We have established a working model of the cultivable coral-associated bacteria and corals to study physiological and biochemical interactions between the corals and the bacteria. Lake ecosystems, comparing to coral reefs, are more an enclosed ecosystem, which has less environmental variables and is more stable; the ecosystem is therefore very suitable for us to explore the influence of microbial community in local environments and the ecological functions. The increasing frequency of strong precipitation is one phenomenon of global warming. To study the impact of the strong precipitation on bacterial community and lake metabolisms, we selected two high mountain lakes (autotrophic and heterotrophic lakes) and are comparing their functional changes in microbial community under the influence of the precipitation.
