- 1.Soil bacterial communities in forests
Differences in the soil bacterial community caused by forest management practices were characterized using 16S ribosomal RNA gene clone libraries. The disturbance of forest harvesting and tree species conversion influence the composition of bacterial community between natural and disturbed forests and increase the diversity of the disturbed forest soil community. - 2.Characteristics of humic substances in forest soils
We investigated soil organic matter in different types of forests. Humic substances were characterized by use of solid-state 13C-NMR spectroscopy. Relatively low degree of humification in soils of the perhumid cypress forest was due to high precipitation and acidity. - 3.Lake metabolism
We used high-frequency in situ dissolved oxygen measurements to investigate the seasonal variability and factors regulating metabolism subalpine lakes in Taiwan. Gross primary production (GPP) and ecosystem respiration both peaked in early summer and mid-autumn but dropped during the typhoon season and winter. Ecosystem respiration was more resistant to external disturbances than GPP and showed strong daily variation during typhoon seasons. Seasonal winter mixing and typhoon-induced water mixing in summer and autumn play a key role in determining the extent to which the lake is a seasonal carbon sink or source to the atmosphere. - 4.Promoting popular science writing.
